"All I want is your signature, why is there even a fee?""Notarisation is not simply about our Notaries signing a document. You require the signature and seal of a Notary to authenticate/ legalise important documents you rely on for divers important reasons, especially when the document is intended to by relied on overseas. There are a number of professional obligations which are inherent in the process of notarising documents that the Notary must comply with, which include: identifying the Appearer; keeping copies of the Notarised documents and Appearer's identification documents; ensuring that the Appearer has the necessary authority to sign the document; ensuring that the Appearer has read and understood the document and that the Appearer understands that he/she will be bound by the document. We have to maintain a protocol register of details of the Appearer and details of the work performed and copies of relevant documents. Authorities often follow-up with the Notary to verify that he/she in fact performed the notarisation on the document being relied on.
